The UCLH Grown Up Congenital Heart [GUCH] unit was established in October 1998 at The Middlesex Hospital, providing inpatient & outpatient services to the increasing numbers of young people who had ‘outgrown’ services at Great Ormond Street Hospital over the years.
UCLH Cardiac services moved to The Heart Hospital in August 2001 enabling us to expand and improve our specialist services for adolescents and adult congenital heart patients. This includes complex catheter interventions, surgical re-operations with specialist anaesthetic support, percutaneous valve implantations and device repair of Mitral and Aortic regurgitation, comprehensive electrophysiological studies, cardiomyopathy/heart failure services, cardiac rhythm management and full imaging services.
The GUCH Nurse Specialists are part of the adult congenital heart team trained to address cardiac and other health issues, providing support, education and counselling for individuals and their families who have congenital heart disease. We have a dedicated Nurse Specialist who looks after women with congenital heart disease who are planning and undertaking pregnancy. We also provide a close liaison with the transitional care services from paediatric to adult care at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The unit has a close link with the GUCH Patients association http://www.guch.org.uk which has played a pivotal role in the publication of the NHS GUCH guidelines and a continued interest in the provision of optimal medical services for this challenging group of patients.
We see 2,200 outpatients per year and perform approximately 250 cardiology procedures and 75 surgical procedures per year.
